Product Feature: Beeswax Lip Balm

Protect your lips from the Canadian Winter and get rid of your chapped lips with our natural lip balms, produced at the University of Guelph Honey Bee Research Centre. Our lip balms contain coconut oil, shea butter, essential oils, and beeswax. All our ingredients are completely natural, and they all have moisturizing effects on skin and lips!

Since the ancient Egyptian times, beeswax has been used to care for the skin topically. Per the Molecules paper, beeswax is a humectant, meaning that it attracts water, aiding in keeping the skin hydrated and plump. Beeswax is also packed with Vitamin A, and thus contributes to regeneration of the skin after damage. In the contemporary world, coconut oil has gained momentum in the natural skin care world, and it all makes sense! The oil has been proven to have moisturizing effects, making it ideal for chapped lips. Coconut oil also exhibits analgesic and antimicrobial properties, which help to speed up the recovery from chapped lips and make them less painful.  While the shea butter helps to reduce skin swelling, the natural essential oils make the lip balms smell amazing.

Compared to synthetic ingredients, the natural ingredients minimize the chances of skin irritation and provide soothing benefits.

Beeswax Lip Balm Instructions

Materials:

  1. Lip balm tubes and lids
  2. Lip balm fill tray
  3. Lip balm spatula
  4. 1L beakers
  5. Spoons
  6. Paper towel
  7. Scale
  8. Small glass bowls
  9. Hot plate
  10. Beeswax (63g)
  11. Shea butter (84g)
  12. Coconut oil (84g)
  13. Essential oils
  14. Labels (optional)

Important notes:

  1. Use different fill trays and spatulas for each lip balm scent. Label them to prevent mix ups!
  2. Use only oil-based scents/flavorings. Water or alcohol-based ingredients (i.e., honey, juice, vanilla extract) will not dissolve into the oil and wax.
  3. The recipe follows a 4:4:3 (coconut oil: shea butter: wax) ratio. Feel free to adjust the amounts of each ingredient, but always follow the ratio (do not forget to adjust the essential oil amounts as well). The total weight of the ingredients in the recipe caters for 50 lip balms.
  4. Essential oils become less potent over time. After addition of the oil to the melted ingredients, stir and smell to judge if more is needed! It is better if the scent is a little strong, because as the lip balms cool, the scent becomes less intense.
  5. Grated bees wax works well for measuring and melting, but wax cakes can be used if they are cut to the proper weight.
  6. Make sure to remove your shea butter and coconut oil from the freezer the day before you are planning to make the lip balms.

Instructions:

  1. Work with clean hands and cover your work surface with brown paper.
  2. Set up the fill tray with the lip balm tubes and insert all your tubes into the fill tray.
  3. Measure out the coconut oil (84g), shea butter (84g), and beeswax (63g) into small bowls.
  4. Combine the ingredients in a 1L beaker and melt over the hot plate on low/medium heat. Be careful not to let it burn (if using wax cakes, melt the wax first, as it will take longer than the coconut oil and shea butter)!
  5. Remove beaker from the hot plate and add essential oil. Lavender, peppermint, orange, and vanilla are great essential oils for lip balms! You can also make it fragrance-free. Different oils require different amounts, so make sure to use your sense of smell to check for the potency!

Our typical essential oil dosage:

Lavender – 40 drops

Peppermint – 50 drops

Orange – 80 drops

Vanilla – 80 drops

  1. Stir well and pour the liquid lip balm over the fill tray/tubes. Fill each lip balm tube slowly until it overflows slightly into the fill tray.
  2. Let the top layer dry, then scrape off the excess lip balm in the fill tray with the spatula. You can re-melt what has been scraped off and pour into any remaining tubes in the fill tray, if needed.
  3. Let lip balms cool (in fill tray) for at least 4 hours.
  4. Optional: Heat up the tops of the lip balms with a hair dryer or heat gun to create a glossy shine on the tops of the lip balm. Let cool again.
  5. Remove tubes from the fill tray and put the lids on the tubes.

You now have natural lip balms, made with moisturizing ingredients! Enjoy!

Clean-up:

  1. Wash beakers, bowls, and spoons by scrubbing with soap and hot water.
