The only high-quality way to go above 300W for TFX!

The only high-quality way to go above 300W for TFX!
UPDATE 03/29/2024: I've had this PSU for about 4 months now. Since writing my initial review, I did a full upgrade on my PC, going from a Core i7-4790 system to a Ryzen 7 7700 and 32GB DDR5, keeping the RTX 4060. I added a pic of the new system (same case) just to show that somehow, I was able to manage the cables a little better (I think). Since connecting this PSU to my NEW system, it has become louder. It is not unbearable, and nowhere near as loud as something like an old PS4, but it is still the loudest component in my system at almost ALL times unless I'm doing something that causes the other fans (CPU/GPU/Case fans etc) to ramp up high, such as gaming or video editing. I have no idea why. It never really gets far beyond "warm" to the touch, and its exhaust air feels only moderately above room temp. The only thing I can think of is that my old motherboard had only a 4-pin CPU power connector. My new motherboard has an 8-pin. Still happy with it but i'm not the first reviewer to mention noise either.I have an InWin CE685 case that came with its own 300W TFX power supply. This was perfectly adequate for my first 3 years of ownership, but upon upgrading to the low-profile RTX 4060, I was in need of a power supply with PCIe power connectors. TFX is a very uncommon form factor - I cannot imagine Silverstone selling a lot of these - but I'm extremely grateful they've made them regardless, and two minutes on the internet will show you that, for capacities over 300W, they're actually the ONLY option (that I've found, anyways). The unit itself is surprisingly (and reassuringly) heavy, the fan is basically never audible even after hours of high loads, has 80+ Gold certification, and it comes with an abundance of connectors. SIGNIFICANTLY more than I needed actually. I did my best to cable manage but in my pic you can see it's still quite a mess. That's probably the only bad thing to say about this PSU - for its price, I really wish they'd just make them modular, but that aside, for the few dozen other TFX users out there, I'd recommend this in a heartbeat (not that there's really any other options to recommend anyways :P).

Pros:
-something better than 300w in the TFX PSU selection.
-8 pin PCIe connector for new video cards
-quiet running (no humm)
-fits my Inwin BL040

Cons:

-an octopus of cables that needs to be tied up
-a second cpu 8 or 4 pin connector would be nice for the newer AM5 motherboards.
-I'm not sure who uses the old molex connectors?

Overall reason for my purchase.

I needed a 500w psu with a 8 pin PCIe connector for the newer RTX 4060 low profile video card I purchased recently. Before I had a 300w psu by Silverstone that still works well but it needed a 6 pin to 8 pin PCIe adapter. I even tried the 700w version.

This psu comes with a nice set of extension cables: The 8 pin PCIe connector and even a daisy change for a second PCIe connector, one pair of molex connectors, a 8 pin cpu connector (just 1 some AM5 boards use 2 now) , 2 pairs of SATA cables, and the 24pin motherboard power cable. It's a old style octopus so the wires have to be tucked or hidden if even possible in a small Irwin BL040 case. Each extension is about 12" long.

This psu connected right up and had no issues. I don't hear a noticeable humming like the 700w had and this 500w psu seems to stay cooler then the 300w previously under load.

Silverstone makes really nice TFX psus!

I needed this to get my small form factor 4060 to work in my old dell case. The cables were a tights fit but it powered right up and is still working.

Note: I’m not sure if this is just the product I received; however, mine does have a high pitched noise when on. (Not from fan, which is almost silent) The noise hasn’t disappeared, but with no pc crashing or weird smells so I think it’s fine.

Contrary to what Silverstone customer support said in the Q&A section, this PSU has no Molex connectors. It has Amp connectors. Amp connectors look a lot like Molex, but they are not interchangeable. So, if you buy this Silverstone PSU to go in one of the compatible Silverstone cases and attempt to install the matching Silverstone slim CD drive, it's Molex power cable will not be able to plug in ANYWHERE on this PSU without an adapter. See the problem here? What even uses Amp connectors? Why add two more useless wires to an already non-modular PSU? A cheap SATA power to Molex cable is all I needed but it’s still kind of annoying.

The main issue though is that the fan is really loud, to the point that it actively lowers my enjoyment of using the system it's in.

My kid obtained a really old Dell Inspiron that surprisingly used standard but slightly hard to find parts. Wanted more GPU power to play some modern games, so found a low profile RTX 4060 that needed the extra wattage and PCIe power cable. This power supply worked perfectly. It's a little noisy with no load, but couldn't really hear it with the case cover on. And the GPU fans drown it out anyways once a game is launched. Only complaint is that the cables were a little long, and also didn't need the Molex connectors; just had to stuff those in an unoccupied drive bay in order to keep the airflow going inside. Perfect portable "sleeper" PC for gaming as long as all the parts keeps going...

2.0 out of 5 stars It's very loud
Reviewed in Canada on March 12, 2024
I bought this psu to add more power for the GPU. Before I had tried flex atx style psus and for me they were performing too loud, it's understandable for the size of the fan. But this TFX 500W psu has a fan which is much much bigger (80mm) and it constantly spinning and even the baseline with no load it will be pretty loud, actually much louder than stock dell PSU (rated at 250W Gold, made by Hipro Electronics). It's not a low frequency fan noise but rather mid high frequency. I'm dissatistied that SilverStone charges 300$ for this PSU with such a cheap noisy fan and no modular connectors. It you plan on building a compact build beware that these cables will be everywhere. I would like to return this PSU. I feel that I downgraded for worse PSU than stock Dell PSU.
