A patient staying in a UK hospital was forced to go elsewhere for food after they were served up a ‘disgusting’ meal.

The dish consisted of some limp slithers of turkey meat, with some watery beans and half a beef tomato with some gravy poured on top.

The horror plate was so foul that hospital bosses have had to apologise to the patient for the meal, which was served up at Ayrshire’s Ayr Hospital in the Combined Assessment Unit, reports Daily Record.

Hazel-Ann McDonald, 55, was the patient receiving the meal and was so shocked that she had to call on her daughter to bring in a McDonald’s to the hospital so she could eat.

The food was the mandatory choice with no other options available, according to the patient's partner Kevin Nicholson, 47, from Prestwick.

Hazel-Ann who was receiving treatment in the assessment unit for an infection has since received an apology from health bosses who admit the meal was “not up to our usual standard.”

Kevin was with Hazel-Ann at the time of her unwanted food delivery and said he was stunned.

“They never gave her any choice, they just dumped it on her.

“I’m just struggling to see that someone thought it was a good choice of a meal. Someone in the kitchen actually thought that was acceptable.

“It’s a complete mess. Beans and gravy just don’t go and why have they just given her half a tomato?

Ayrshire Live NHS Ayrshire & Arran told the Daily Record that food options on the Combined Assessment Units regularly include soup and sandwiches, but choices were sometimes limited at busy times.

“Usually in the wards you get a menu choice, there is plenty to choose from but this was just inedible, said Kevin.

“My partner refused to eat it and my daughter had to bring her a McDonald’s instead.”
