Maruti Suzuki launched the 5-door Jimny in India earlier in May this year. The 5-door iteration is exclusively produced at the company’s Gurugram-based plant and now the compact off-roader is being shipped to overseas markets. In October, the 5-door Jimny reached the shores of South Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East.
Now, the 5-door Jimny has landed in Australia. Rebranded as Jimny XL, the ladder-on-frame SUV is largely the same as the India-spec model, barring one major inclusion— Advanced Driver’s Assistance System (ADAS).
Jimny gets ADAS in Australia
The Jimny gets an ADAS suite with Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) as standard in order to comply with the Australian safety norms. For the uninitiated, ADAS with AEB is a mandatory requirement for passenger and commercial vehicles in Australia without which the car will be awarded a zero stars under the Australian NCAP safety norms.
Besides AEB, the ADAS suite in the Australia-spec Jimny gets advanced safety features such as lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, high-beam assist, and weaving alert system which takes input from a front camera and laser sensors. Other standard safety features on offer include six airbags, ESC and traction control.
Jimny XL powertrain specs
Under the hood, the Jimny XL gets the same engine as the India-spec 5-door Jimny. Powering it is a 1.5-litre K-series naturally aspirated petrol motor that is tuned slightly differently. It delivers a peak output of 100 bhp and 130 Nm of torque. Transmission duties are carried out by a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. An AllGrip 4×4 drivetrain is available as standard.
