Celtic crowned kings of the world in one key stat as Hoops take No1 spot over PSG, Man City and Barcelona

It's not the first time the Hoops have taken top spot in one key area

CELTIC are no strangers to silverware in Scotland as they are chasing their 54th league title this season.

Rangers have won the only trophy available this campaign so far though following their Viaplay Cup triumph over Aberdeen at Hampden in December.

But while Philippe Clement's men got their hands on the League Cup, Brendan Rodgers' side have taken one particular crown - beating every other top flight club in the world in the process.

The Hoops have been labelled the new kings of possession-based football, according to new data that has been released.

According to the CIES Football Observatory, Celtic have the highest per cent of ball possession out of 54 top divisions worldwide.

The Hoops come out on top with an average of 66.8 per cent possession on average per match.

Slovak side AS Trencin take second place with 65.9 per cent, while Greek outfit Panathinaikos come in third with an average of 65.4 per cent.

The world elite enter the fray from fourth place onwards as French champions PSG take that spot with 64.8 per cent.

Pep Guardiola's Man City follow closely behind in fifth with a tally of 64.3 per cent, while Barcelona come in next with 64.1 per cent.

The top 10 is made up of Ecuadorian outfit Independiente del Valle, Serbian side Red Star Belgrade, Moroccan club Wydad Athletic Club and Slavia Prague.

Celtic are the only current league champions from the top three, while just Red Star Belgrade, Barcelona, PSG and Man City hold their nation's domestic title.

The Hoops were dubbed the passing kings of world football when Ange Postecoglou was in charge of the club in 2021.

According to the same data, Celtic passed the ball 734 times on average in the Premiership from the first part of the 2021/22 season.

It was the biggest figure from all 654 teams analysed across the 40 top leagues around the globe.
