Molas are undoubtedly the most famous Art produced in Panama. The Kuna Women have been sewing these works of Art for years.

They incorporate them into their clothing, usually with one Mola serving as the front of the blouse, and another for the back. The Mola is often described as a reverse appliqué. For each color of cloth that you see there is a piece of cloth of that color sewn into the Mola. Each Mola is hand-stitched with thousand of stitches.

The quality of a Mola is determined by such factors as the number of layers, fineness of the stitching, evenness and width of cutouts, addition of details such as zigzag borders, lattice-work or embroidery, and general artistic merit of the design and color combination.

The Wounaan and Embera people from the rainforest in Darien province of Panama are master artisans. The baskets are hand woven using natural fibers found in the forest.

A variety of reeds and palm fibers are normally used. Chunga, the fiber of the black palm, is the fiber of choice among the weavers. The colors are produced with natural extracts of plants and earth, using the traditional methods for dyeing basket fibers. Seldom, if ever, are two baskets alike.

The original designs usually portray life in the village, local animals and insects, or plant life. Income earned from the sale of these lovely baskets reduces the need to destroy the rainforest

Throughout Panama,and much of Central and South America native artists create beautiful works of art from "vegatable ivory", the Tagua Nut. The tree from which it falls, the Ivory Nut Palm grows primarily in the Central American Rainforest.

The Tagua Nut when dried are able to be carved into beautiful ivory-like sculptures. The local artists sometimes leave them in their natural off-white color, and sometimes color them with delicate painting or inking with special dyes.

The Wounaan people are master artisans from the Darien-Chocoregion of Panama. The Wounaan artisans carve the Tagua with hand tools and polish the Tagua with a series of fine abrasives bringing them to a beautiful shine.
